5월 29일에 영면하신 로빈 머레이 선생님의 장례식이 지난 지난 6월 19일, 선생님의 댁이 있던 런던 해크니의 올세인트 교회(All Saints Church, Haggerston)에서 열렸습니다. 선생님 일생 구비구비에서 함께 했던 많은 동료, 친구, 가족들이 모여 선생님과의 시간을 추억했고, 선생님이 일궈내었던 여러 사회 변화를 돌이켜보고 함께 축하하는 자리이기도 하였습니다. 지구촌 어디에서나 사회 변화를 구하던 모든 이들에게 호기심, 열정, 지혜, 지성으로 한사람 한사람 눈을 맞추며 토론을 이끌어 주시던 선생님이 많이 그립습니다.
이미 그와 함께 했던 여러 기관, 동료분들(영파운데이션, 협동조합연합회, 디바인초콜렛, 리버레이션넛츠, Hilary Wainwright, 트윈 트레이드, 가디언 신문 등)께서 그를 기리는 말씀을 남기셨지만 한국에 더욱 특별한 관심과 성원을 보여주신 선생님께 고마움을 표하고자 저희 스프레드아이(SPREAD-i) 가 한국의 사회혁신가, 협동조합운동 동료들을 대표하여 장례식에서 추도사를 낭독했습니다. 여기 로빈 머레이 선생님과 나눈 마지막 추억을 공유해 드립니다. 그리고 끝으로 장례식에 모인 분들이 함께 부른 노래, One Man's Hands 의 가사 입니다.

"I am honoured to have known Robin as my mentor and friend. 저의 멘토이자 친구로 로빈 선생님과 교류한 것은 저에게는 영광입니다.
Robin has been an educator, facilitator and mentor for the South Korean cooperative and social innovation movement. 로빈 선생은 대한민국 협동조합 운동가 사회혁신 운동을 위한 교육가이자, 조력자이자, 멘토이셨습니다.
When I first met Robin in 2011, South Korea was going through an interesting civic history. A civil activist, a great champion of co-operation and popular democracy, Wonsoon Park, became the mayor of Seoul City as an independent candidate. We started seeing exciting changes. The city opened up many channels for citizen participation and there was also a growing support and interest in social economy. 제가 2011년 로빈 선생님을 처음 만났을 때, 대한민국은 흥미로운 시민사회의 역사를 만들어 나가고 있었습니다. 시민 운동가이자 협동과 대중적 민주주의의 훌륭한 챔피언인 박원순씨가 무소속으로 서울시 시장으로 당선되었습니다. 서울시민들은 흥분되는 변화를 보기 시작하였습니다. 서울시는 시민 참여를 위한 많은 채널들을 제공하였고, 사회적 경제에 대한 지원과 관심도 증가하기 시작하였습니다.
When Robin returned from a visit to Korea that year meeting with Park and other co-operators on the ground, he was very excited. “We must write about the changes that are happening in Korea” – he said. He emphasised the need for learning exchanges between different places. He was always interested in what people do and how they make it work in different contexts. 박원순 시장님이 서울 시장의 후보로서 선거운동을 하던 시기에 한국을 방문하여 박원순 시장님과 많은 협동조합인, 사회혁신가들을 (제 동료인 정원과 함께) 만나고 돌아온 후, 로빈 선생님은 매우 흥분되어 있으셨습니다. "지금 한국에서 일어나고 있는 이 (시민의) 변화를 우리는 꼭 기록해야되." 라고 말씀 하셨습니다. 로빈 선생님은 늘 사람들이 무엇을 하며, 어떻게 사람들이 서로 다른 맥락과 배경에서 무언가를 만들어내어 성공시켜내는지에 큰 관심을 가지셨습니다.
Inspired by Robin, my friend Jungwon, Kwansoo and I set up SPREAD-I platform, a media platform that disseminates practices and case studies on social change. We were inspired by Robin’s thoughts on “spreading social innovation” – he thought the word “scaling” didn’t capture the organic and formative nature of social change. 로빈 선생님으로 영감을 받고 격려를 받은 저는, 제 친구인 정원, 관수와 함께 스프레드아이 플랫폼을 시작하였습니다. 스프레드아이 플랫폼은 사회를 변화시키는 현장 모델과 사례 연구를 퍼트리는 미디어 플랫폼입니다. 저희 셋은 로빈 선생님이 늘 강조하시던 "사회혁신을 퍼뜨린다"는 메세지에 영감을 받았습니다. 로빈 선생님은 "규모"라는 단어는 사회 변화를 만들어가는 유기적인 성장의 본질을 나타내지 못하는 단어라고 하셨습니다.
Robin used to say, “Fair Trade... no one planned that. Suddenly the idea caught the imagination. Once you have a project that has magnetism, then others join, support and do it in their own way. You start linking together. I think it’s hard not to collaborate... Charisma of a project is more important than the charismatic leader!!” 로빈 선생님께서 늘 말씀하시던 것으로, "공정 무역.. 아무도 그것을 계획하지 않았었어. 갑자기 새로운 아이디어가 상상력을 자극했었지. 일단 프로젝트가 자성을 갖게되면, 다른 사람들도 프로젝트에 참여하게 되고, 지원하게 되고, 그 프로젝트는 스스로 길을 찾아서 진행되게되지. 그렇게되면 프로젝트를 시작한 사람들을 이런 후속 참가자와 지원자들을 함께 연결하기 시작하지. 나는 이럴 때면 협동하지 않는 것이 어렵게된다고 생각해. 프로젝트의 카리스마는 카리스마 리더보다 훨씬 중요해!!"
This was the start of many more inspirations and relationships that Robin would have with the South Korean movement. With the new “social innovation” mayor in Seoul City and with the enactment of Basic Law on Cooperatives, there was a huge interest in Korea to connect with the social economy practitioners in Europe. 이런 경험은 로빈 선생님께서 한국의 사회운동과 함께 연대할 수 있었던 더 많은 영감과 관계의 시작이었습니다. 새로 선출된 서울의 "사회 혁신" 시장과 함께, 대한민국 협동조합 기본법 제정을 할 때 등, 한국내에서는 유럽의 많은 사회적 경제 활동가와 전문가와의 연계에 큰 관심이 있었습니다.
Robin made sure that they visited and learnt from real practice. When a group of Korean policymakers and researchers came to visit, we went on a visit to the Midcounties Co-operative. Robin sat with each person during the 2-hour bus journey and spent time getting to know their work, thoughts and what they hoped to learn. When the bus driver asked where we are going, he was so excited to tell him about the co-operative movement in the UK and why this visit was so meaningful. The bus driver became part of the study visit group. 로빈은 한국의 동료들이 실제 현장을 방문하고 배울 수 있도록 지원을 해주셨습니다. 한국내 협동조합 기본법 제정을 위한 정책입안가와 연구자들이 영국을 방문하였을 때, 저희는 로빈 선생님과 함께 미드카운티 협동조합을 방문하였습니다. 로빈 선생님은 버스로 이동하던 2시간동안 한국 방문객 한명 한명 옆에 앉아서, 방문객들이 누구인지 어떤 협동조합 일을 하고 있는지, 어떤 생각을 하며 이 방문을 통해 무엇을 배우고 싶어하는지를 묻고 알아가셨습니다. 버스 운전기사님께서 목적지가 어디인지를 묻자, 로빈 선생님은 매우 신나하시면서 버스 기사님께 영국의 협동조합 운동을 알고있는지 그 역사를 설명해주시면서 지금 이 한국 동료들과의 방문이 얼마나 중요한 일인가를 설명하셨습니다. 갑자기 버스 기사님도 한국 연수팀의 일원이 되어버렸습니다.
Robin always encouraged us to write, create more content and share them with others. He mentored and encouraged us throughout our documentary project on co-operative education and housing called “The Mutual Future”. With Robin, we imagined the possible utopia that exists. He showed us the possibility of a cooperative future not only through our shared conversations but also through his actions. He was involved in setting up community cooperative in his hometown. His words and actions continue to live on. 로빈 선생님은 항상 저희에게 기록하고, 더 많은 컨텐츠를 만들고 그것들을 많은 이들과 공유하라고 장려하셨습니다. 선생님의 저희팀의 멘토이셨고, 저희 협동조합 교육 다큐멘터리와 "호혜의 미래"라는 협동조합 주택 컨텐츠 프로젝트 작업 동안 지속적으로 조언을 해주셨습니다. 로빈 선생님과 함께, 저희팀은 존재하는 가능한 유토피아를 상상했었습니다. 로빈 선생님은 협동조합의 미래는 단지 우리들이 공유하는 대화속에서 뿐만 아니라 실제로 로빈 선생님의 행동속에 있음을 보여주셨습니다. 로빈 선생님은 최근에는 고향에 커뮤니티 협동조합을 설립하는 일에 관여하셨습니다. 로빈 선생님의 말씀과 행동은 함께 지속됩니다.
His experience and wisdom seemed large and our efforts insignificant, but he always had time to listen to us over a pot of tea. He emphasised the shared experience of drinking tea with other rather than having an individualised teabag in a mug. He grieved with us when Sewol ferry disaster happened in Korea. He listened to our frustrations and dreams. 선생님의 경험과 지혜는 매우 커보였고 우리들의 노력은 중요해보이지 않았지만, 로빈선생님은 항상 영국 차를 앞에 두고 저희의 이야기를 경청해주시는 시간을 내주셨습니다. 그럴 때마다 선생님은 항상 영국 차를 마실때 각자의 잔에 티백을 넣고 차를 우려내 마시는 것 보다 다 함께 차 주전자에 티백을 넣어 차를 우려내어 함께 마시는 공동의 경험을 강조하셨습니다. 차를 마실때도 함께함을 이야기하셨습니다. 로빈 선생님은 한국에서 세월호 참사가 벌어졌을 때 저희와 함께 슬퍼하셨습니다. 로빈 선생님의 저희의 절망과 꿈을 항상 들어주셨습니다.
Robin continues to live in us all, in our ideas, dreams and what connects us as human beings. He will continue to be our teapot that holds our hope together. 로빈 선생님은 저희 모두와 계속 살아계실 것입니다. 저희의 아이디어, 꿈, 인간으로 저희들을 연결하는 것들 속에 계속 살아계실 것입니다. 로빈 선생님은 우리의 꿈을 이어주는 우리의 차 주전자로 늘 곁에 계실것입니다.
